Dub Definition

«Bei Dub geht es prinzipiell um Bass und die Reduktion und Ausdünnen von Rhythmik und Klang. Gesang und Melodie eines Stückes werden teilweise oder ganz weggelassen, prinzipiell der Subtraktion folgend bis auf den Kern der Komposition. Der so geschaffene Raum ermöglicht das Experimentieren mit Mischtechniken und Effekten (Reverb, Delay, Phaser, Flanger, Pan…). Dub ist humorvoll, lebt von einer gewissen dadaistische Veranlagung die Zeit dehnen zu können und war der Anfang vom Sampling. Historisch gesehen ist Dub aus dem Roots-Reggae der 60/70er Jahren entstanden und heisst auch Erneutes Überspielen/to double. Seit den 90er Jahren ist dubbing in der elektronischen Musik ein festes Stilmittel und Dank den vielen Facetten der elektronisch produzierten Musik dem breiten Publikum ein Begriff. Lee Scratch Perry meinte mal: Anything can be dub.»

ca. 1986/87 wegen The Clash’s Compilation Album...

1990 mit Lee Scratch Perry & Mad Professor - Mystic Warrior

1991 mit Massive Attack - Blue Lines

1992 mit The Orb - Blue Room

1993 mit der Massive Attack Meets vs. Madprofessor LP - No Protection

1994 mit Basic Channel - Quadrant Dub II.

Nie vergessen werde ich auch meinen ersten Besuch am Nothing Hill Gate Carneval 1995. Die Soundsystem-Kultur am Karneval hatte in der Zeit noch keine auferlegten Gesetze und war kommerziell noch unberührt; jedes Haus, jede Strassenecke war im Groove - pulsierende Bässe, typische off Shruds/Stabs, mehrheitlich reiner Reggae und Dub, Jamaican/Carribean Power, ein riesen Erlebnis.

Insgesamt war das Entdecken von Dub ein sehr langer Prozess, welcher fast 8 Jahre gedauert hat.»

Rastafari

«Ich stimme zu, das Dub über Musik hinaus geht. Neben der Musik hat Dub auch seine visuelle und politische Sprache. Es gab einige bekannte Rastafari-Produzenten und Musiker, die die Musik mitgeprägt haben. Es ist aber nicht so, dass die Rastafaribewegung den Reggae oder den Dub erfunden hätte. Vielmehr ist aus dem speziellen Zustand des Landes, Jamaica war lange in einer wirtschaftlichen und politischen Depression, die Identität der Musik mit dem Spirituellen der Rastafari angereichert worden.

Diese Identität ist auf positiven Grundsätzen aufgebaut. Man wollte etwas bewegen und daran zu glauben, insofern ist es ein Segen. Die Musik hat den Jamaicans eine positive Identität geben und auch neue Chancen eröffnet.»

Dub Inspiration

« Neue Genres werden häufig zu Definitionszwecken und aus reinen Verlegenheit definiert. Streng genommen bewegen wir uns auf einen Zerfall der Musikstile hinzu. Heute stellen Länder, Regionen und Städte, demzufolge die darin lebenden Personen die Kategorien dar und verflüssigen die Musikrichtungen. Dub ist hier mal Genre, da mal Stilmittel, woanders eine Herausforderung. Ich versuche mich daher nicht nur in einem Genre aufzuhalten. Von wo her die Musik kommt –Space & Klangfarben – ist für mich fast entscheidender, als in Genres zu denken. Mit new.com, Lukem und Qwan Studios habe ich grossartige Sparringpartner und eine wahnsinnige Quelle aus sich immerzu mutierenden Genres, von welchen ich momentan dubwised electronic Music am spannendsten finde.»

Dub Szene Schweiz

« Es gibt in der Schweiz viele Leute die sich mit Dub und Dub-verwandter Musik auseinandersetzen. Immer wieder lerne ich neue Leute kennen, die ziemlich vorlegen oder den Gestandenen in nichts nahestehen. Die Szene für Bass, Rhythm & dubwised electronic music ist somit wahnsinnig vielseitig und sehr aktiv – das Verständnis für tiefe Frequenzen ist definitiv vorhanden. Dank meinem Studiopartner Marius Neukom aka new.com (dubexmachina, bold, comfortnoise), der mich immer auf dem neuesten Stand hält, habe ich einen guten Einblick in das nationale und internationale Bass-Musik-Geschehen.

Die Roots Szene in Zürich ist sehr aktiv im Exil, Stall 6 oder Roten Fabrik. Die Romands haben immer wieder viel Erfolg mit Ihren Produktionen in Frankreich und auf meiner To-Do Liste in nächster Zeit ist jedenfalls ein Event mit dem Tengu Soundsystem aus St. Gallen. Anscheinend ist dies zur Zeit eines der besten und authentischsten Bass-Soundsystemen der Schweiz.»
