Disco Faszination

 

«Disco ist die tanzende Mutter aller Musikstile! Es ist der Musikstil wo sich am weitesten verbreitet hat auf dem Globus und gleichzeitig unsere heutige Musik am grössten beeinflusst hat. Disco läutete damals eine komplett neue Ära ein, die sich bis heute immer noch präsent auswirkt. Der sogenannte Four-to-the-Floor-Rhythmus, wo die Kickdrum auf jeden 4/4-Schlag kommt, hat Meilensteine für praktisch die gesamte neue Musik gesetzt. Produktionen wurden vermehrt nur noch im Studio gespielt um Schallplatten für die DJs herzustellen, ohne den wirklichen Live-Aspekt einer Band (teilw. One-Man Show mit Playback für die Live-Auftritte). Die Band wurde Mitte Achtziger sogar stellenweise komplett durch Synthesizers und Drum Machines ersetzt und die ersten DJs lösten bald darauf die Bands ab. Man ging nicht mehr an Konzerte und hörte die Musik live für ein paar Stunden, sondern ging in die DISCO um die ganze Nacht lang zu tanzen. Man hörte einem DJ zu, der hunderte von Bands und verschiedene Musik (ab-)spielen vermochte und das bis in die frühen Morgenstunden...»

«Dass sich Benjamin Damage vom Beat-Bastler zu einem soliden UK-Technoproduzent entwickelte, finde ich positiv. Nicht, weil ich seinen Sound jetzt mehr mag als früher, sondern weil ich es an tollen UK-Bass-Artists wie ihm sehr schätze, dass sie sich nie darauf ausruhen, mal etwas Innovatives produziert zu haben. Es wäre falsch zu sagen, Benjamin Damage hätte früher das eine gemacht und mache jetzt das andere. Jede einzelne Platte hat immer neue Akzente gesetzt und das wird auch in Zukunft so sein, da bin ich mir sicher.»

«Ich war gerade 18 geworden und kannte die elektronische Tanzmusik überhaupt nicht, Hip-Hop war mein Ding. Trotzdem hatte mir irgendjemand zum Feiern die Dachkantine empfohlen. Als der Aufzug das Basswummern erreichte, dachte ich: 'Hilfe, wir stürzen ab!' Als wir später sicher an der Garderobe standen, dachte ich: 'Krass, das ist Musik, die hört man nicht, die spürt man nur.' Zwei Minuten später ertönte endlich ein einzelnes 'Tick'. Die Leute schrien und ich fragte mich, in welchem Irrenhaus ich hier gelandet war. Dann ging es so weiter: 'Tick-bum-bum-bum, Tick-bum-bum-bum...' Und dann nur noch Rauschen. Alle rissen ihre Arme in die Luft, ich wusste nicht, wie mir geschah. Plötzlich wurde es ganz still. Und dann: 'Tick-tick-tick-tick...' Am nächsten Tag habe ich mir zwei Plattenspieler und einen Mixer besorgt.»

«Als ich von Zürich nach Berlin gezogen bin, habe ich sehr viel Zeit im Hard Wax verbracht. Einer der Verkäufer damals hieß René. Erst nach ein paar Monaten wurde mir klar, dass das Shed ist, und so ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit gar nicht so klein, dass ich meine erste Platte von ihm direkt bei ihm gekauft habe, ohne das zu wissen... Wahrscheinlich die Well Done My Son EP auf Soloaction.»
